Currently Listening
In Rainbows
By Radiohead
bodysnatchers
see related

this might be too early...

...but i'm starting to get excited that in just a couple of months I'm going to have my bachelor's degree!
The semester is kicking my ass though. This week has been my least busy week yet which is why I'm able to blog right now. I'm in a class called Senior Design in which we have to apply everything we've learned and build/engineer something. I'm in a group with two other peers and we're creating a clothing device for a 4-year-old girl with a condition called Arthrogryposis. The condition puts physical limitations on her and she is unable to dress herself without human assistance. So our goal is to design something that she can use to wake up in the morning and dress herself before she sees anyone. It's pretty cool and I hope it works out.
i'm excited to have a graduation party.
i'm excited to make more than intern money.
and it's kinda fun when you're busy but not behind on things.

overtaught

I'm reading this book in which the author says that in the medical field they used to let students watch a professional do something numerous times before they would ever try it. however, this method didn't work because they soon would develop a fear of the task at hand. so now, they watch once, then do it themselves, and then teach someone else how to do it. This author then paralleled this to how the church is often run today. Basically, we sit in church and watch others do it.

i'm definitely one who has watched too much. I want to DO.

2007 In Review

Music

Albums I loved:

1.       Under Your Bright Wings—Sarah McMillan

Beautiful, simple, and undeniable.

Many have heard of JohnMark McMIllan. This is his wife’s fantastic EP that makes you understand why anyone would ever want to play folk music.

Sarah’s voice beautifully captures the honesty of her relationship with Jesus in an album that immediately brings God to earth with its first track “Flesh and Bone” (my favorite song of the year). It then continues with a folk-country flavor that you can’t help but love even though you want to resist anything country. Not a single track is worth skipping. I LOVE this album.

2.       In Rainbows—Radiohead

Head to toe unique and interesting.  In an unpretentious way, the music effortlessly keeps you on your heels without feeling the slightest bit contrived. Confident, flawless and an instant classic.

Other good listens:

Joel Khouri—These Streets Come Alive

What I appreciate about this album that it stays true as a worship album. These aren’t basic sing-a-long worship songs either. The songs flow and are spontaneous. The album slowly draws you into a deep place of worship and meditation and it doesn’t ever feel like it’s trying too  trick you with music to take you there.

M.I.A.—Kala

Ridiculous beats. Lots of energy, original and flavorful.

Spoon—Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Fun and easy to listen to.

Brandon Willett—Sh’ma

Brandon Willett’s fist album is Interesting and easy to worship with. I think if he continues he could make some really great stuff.

Movies (and television)

I’m going to start this by saying that my favorite view of the year actually came from television.

The Best:

24: Season 4

I’m only going to talk about movies I watched this year. It doesn’t necessarily have to be made this year.

What I loved:

United 93

Last Holiday

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

The Great Escape – I used to not like old movies at all but I loved this.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Before Sunrise

Zodiac

A Prairie Home Companion

Other good views:

The Bourne Ultimatum

Eastern Promises

Disturbia

Darjeeling Limited

The Departed

Black Snake Moan

Before Sunset

School for Scoundrels

Wayne’s World 2

Children of Men

The Science of Sleep

Ocean’s 13

Stranger Than Fiction

License to Kill (James Bond)

Breach

The Devil Wears Prada

Babel

Scoop

Bubble

For Your Consideration

Personal review

I’m 2 semesters and a summer class closer to a degree. I have to imagine life will be easier when school is finished.

This year there was a very healthy transition in my church life. I now go to NearWest Vineyard church and it has made the last third of the year the most enjoyable part of the year for me.

I’ve grown this year. I’m better off now than I was a year ago.
